BIKE Republic

Bike Republic started in 2004 as a private corporation to provide goods and services to non-vehicular commuters and athletes who bike or run into downtown Portland. Operations are being considered at several strategic sites in downtown Portland.

Bike Republic will be a facility for downtown professionals and a hub for targeted goods and services. Facility members will be offered a basket of services including: secure full-service bike parking, personal lockers, showers, dry cleaning/laundry delivery, while members and the general public will be offered quick food/beverage, bike repair/rental, and bike and running accessories.

Our members and customers will include downtown athletes and a few of the 10,000 bike commuters that come into Portland every day for work. The average age and socio-economic status of a Portland bike commuter is on the rise. Older professionals want to stay fit, help the environment, save on fuel costs, and they have less time and more money for fitness.

Investors have shown an interest in one recent proposal on the west side of the Hawthorne Bridge, a route that sees over 5,000 bike trips per day. Bike Republic will also consider public/private partnerships at locations that satisfy public objectives.

Management consists of Ken Nichols and Mark Johnson, both with experience developing and operating new businesses. Business start date will be tied to the location and lease arrangement, but ideally Bike Republic's business will be ready by March 2008.
